The mansion was erected on the waterfront of the harbor of Key West. The house was transformed into a single-family home around the start of the 20th century in order to accommodate the base commandant.
Numerous notable visitors have stayed at the home. During World War I, Thomas Edison lived in the house and worked for the U.S. Navy conducting research on depth charges.
Harry Truman started going to Key West for vacations in 1946 and stayed there for 175 days when he was president. Winter White House, Quarters A.
The house was occupied by President Dwight Eisenhower in 1956 as he recovered from a heart attack. During the Bay of Pigs incident in 1961, President John F. Kennedy and British Prime Minister Harold MacMillan were guests of the Little White House. Up until Truman Naval Station's closure in 1974, the mansion served as the base's commanding officers' residence. President Jimmy Carter and his family spent New Year's Eve 1996 with relatives and friends at the house while on vacation. The wives of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the United States, Great Britain, Germany, and France attended a private luncheon in the Little White House in April 2000.

- Visitors travel from all over the world to see the Little White House. With your ticket purchase, you will receive printed scripts in Czech, French, German, Japanese, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish. Translators are permitted free entrance when accompanying a party of six or more,
- Service animals are permitted to join their owners on tours. All other pets in the Truman Annex gated enclave must adhere to tight leash laws.
