Potter's, the country's first wax museum, has been entertaining visitors since 1949. George Potter had a fantasy of building his own wax museum in the United States, inspired by his childhood visit to a wax museum in London.
More than 160 distinct wax figurines, each an exact life-size replica of the men and women they portray, may be found at Potter's Wax Museum today. Before producing these astonishingly lifelike statues, artists and craftsmen in the British Museum researched the method extensively. "Every part of the figure is custom-tailored, using real hair that is grown by women in Italy and placed onto the figure a single strand at a time," founder George Potter said of his painstaking method. The hands are carved in Belgium using imported French wax, while the eyes are manufactured in Germany. One of the best designers in the business, Costumers to the Court of Saint James, created even the outfits.
